Lecture
Week 5
Today, we were briefed on our project one, where we had to do an editorial writing layout with the options of text given to us. We were limited to the nine typefaces and were allowed to add some graphical elements.
Week 6-7
We were given feedback on our work by Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul.
Instructions
[Sketches]
I came up with a few designs for my headline 'A Designer's Code of Ethics.' In the designs, I decided to impact the word 'code,' so I came up with a few sketches highlighting the word.

In my work, I had made a mistake in the size of the page which should have been 200mm x 200mm. Next, I also decided to change the typeface to Jason Text Lt and the size to 10 points, with the leading of 13 points. I fixed the text alignment and tracking.

Still, I didn't feel my design was interesting enough so I tried making one of the right arrow overlap into the next page. I also changed the type family for the word CODE to ITC New Baskerville Std and left the rest as Futura Std. I moved the words 'of Ethics' down next to the text.

Feedback
Week 6:
General Feedback: Express one word in the headline and make sure the body text point size should be between 8-12 points.
Specific Feedback: Fix the size of the page.
Week 7:
General Feedback: Never use two different serifs in the same text. Don't use Bodoni for body text as it has too much
Specific Feedback: The expression is not the most creative, but good job on the kerning.
Reflection
Week 5: Experience: The first project in typography wasn't a super difficult one if you were already familiar with letter spacing, Kering, and tracking. These were the terms Mr. Vinod went through again in the last class so I watch the video and try to follow to make my job a bit easier. Observations: One observation I made while doing this project is the way the letterspacing changes when you use different alignment. I thought to fix the ragging I could use center align but that made a river throughout the text and didn't look good. I had to manually fix the ragging the best I can with the left alignment.
Findings: Aligning the headline with the body text can be difficult because they are not the same size. I had to figure out how to align the first word the headline and the second line with the body text.
Week 6: Experience: This project ended up being more stressful than expected, mainly due to my mistake. Even though I thought I was doing the right things, I ended up making several mistakes; the most important one was the page's size. I had watched the video and even written down the page's size, but in the end, I was working on the wrong size page. Observations: One observation I made from my classmates' work was their creativity in expressing one word. When starting this project, I didn't explore creative layouts because I felt it would affect my readability. However, seeing the work of my classmates and their unique format proved me wrong. Findings: I need to focus more on my work and even have someone to revise it if needed. Even if I don't mean to make mistakes, I end up making them anyways due to not paying attention to details. I also need to read the Module Information Booklet before starting the project, so I know the requirements.
Further Reading
Fig.1 Book Typographic design
- The sort of text that is too small or too big makes it difficult to read. Small type decreases visibility by breaking counter forms.
- Typographers and designers are responsible for communicating to their readers as quickly as possible. This helps readers to clearly understand typographical forms.
- Working efficiently with a typographic grid is to recognize that it is often a system of proportions. The basic square is the natural division of the golden segment.
- Words are known for their distinctive shapes, while Counterforms produce patterns that provide clues for word recognition. The combination of word type and internal pattern creates a structure of words that determines the particular composition of each expression.
- The designer's own innate sense of proportion is nurtured by observation and practice.
- The problem is often to view the text block and the page margins as a proportional system.
- When setting ragged-right text, care should be taken not to overpower the form. Uncontrolled line breaks of irregular rhythm can create sloppy spaces that inhibit reading.
- Choosing the right typeface for the content; adjusting the letter and line spacing for optimum legibility. Developing the proportions to set an appropriate tone requires the designer’s attention.
- Choosing the right typeface for the content; adjusting the letter and line spacing for optimal readability.

- Whitespace is any unmarked space or spaces between lines, paragraphs, pictures, etc.
- A whitespace is a design tool used to create visual aesthetics and improve layouts.
- Whitespace is critical for readability and navigation control.
- Layouts with whitespace are successful in keeping readers interested and gaining their attention.
- Viewers are more likely to revisit the website when the website is clean and easy to navigate.
- Whitespace increases the accessibility of content and viewers' tastes, thereby increasing the efficiency of the layout in the delivery of information.
