SELF-TITLED IDEA: (Write your research/ idea in between 100 - 300 words)

The first image is from one of my favorite artists, worldofcat; I love her use of different textures and words that give the design an overall vintage vibe. She uses a variety of exposures and blending modes to provide a unique composition to her designs. The second design is by Zeka design; I like this style because even with so many different elements, the overall design looks very minimal and clean. Plus, all the shapes complement and emphasize the person well; it doesn't take away from the main focus. The color is mostly black and white with some red, but the design still doesn't look dull.  The third design is from an album cover design for a Kpop singer. The man's image is taken and made to look like its drawn with crayons or color pencils. The design concept is quite simple, yet it still very effective in catching the viewer's eye because of how vibrant colors were used. I want it to incorporate texture and have an overall vintage look, similar to the first reference for my design. I love painting and drawing, so like the third reference, I want to add paint strokes to some parts of my face and hair. I would also like to add my cat as he is a very important part of my life and I was thinking of keeping my image black and white.

DESIGN ELEMENTS:

Fig.1.4 supporting elements

Your description: For my photoshop, I wanted to have a vintage vibe to it. Taking reference from an artist world of cat who also does her painting using many layers of textures, I wanted to layer my elements. So I choose lots of fabric texture and grunge mask. I wanted to decorate around myself using flowers, so I picked flowers from vintage articles to go with the theme.

                        [Week 7]

Fig.1.5 New design elements

I wanted to adjust some of the design elements, as I thought the ones I selected before I didn't compliment each other well. I added the pressed flower, the letter paper, and removed one of the grunge textures.

Fig.1.6 Progress 1

I restarted the design and changed the layout completely. I made the photograph of myself black and white contrasting with the yellow and brown tones. I made a circle mask of the letter paper and used it behind my head to attract the eyes more to my face.

Fig.1.7 Progress 2

I added the brown fabric by using a selection tool to cut it sloppily to give the effect of the torn fabric. I cut some rectangles using the red velvet fabric and styled it to give the whole design more unity. I just inserted the flower to see how I like the placements; later, I decided to delete it.

Fig.1.8 Progress 3

Then I tried designing around myself using the flowers and leaves. I masked out a specific part of the flowers I wanted to use instead of using the whole picture, and then I added the multiply as blending mode, so it agreed with the background more. I also make the brown paper into a circle, and when looking through the blending mode, I found color burn gave a very nice yellow tone to the image that complimented well with the brown fabric.

Fig.1.9 Typography

I added typography, I kept it simple in an old typewriter style and just wrote my birthday. I didn't add any more words because it looked like there was too much going on combined with the letter mask.

Fig.2.0 Progress 4

I tried to use a different picture with the same style to see if this picture was going better with it, but in the end, I decided to use the old image as it matched the vibe I was going for more.

Fig.2.1 80% Progress

[Week 9]

After the feedback, I didn't change much as Mr. Fauzi said it looked nice the way it was. I made the background a bit lighter as I thought the whole design was looking a bit dull due to me using black and white. I added more of the pressed flower throughout so there is some repetition in the design. I added one in the lower right-hand side as it was looking a little empty and then added the small bee. For the bee, I added 'lighter color' as blending mode to make it pop up a bit more and for the flower, I used 'linear light' as it contrasted well with the black.

Feedback

[Week 5]: That's a good concept Sajiya. You may proceed with your work using reference #1 & #3

[Week 6]: Try a more simplified design and try to emphasize more on yourself, the other elements should be supporting.

[Week 7]: That's good progress! I love how you bring the old-school kinda design to your work. You may proceed to 100% progress and get ready to submit later on (Week 9). Good job!

Reflection

Experience: This was an enjoyable assignment to do; I got a chance to play around and to be able to express my creativity. I am thankful that there were no restrictions on what images we could use because I felt that it encouraged me to experiment further and achieve a satisfactory outcome.
Observation: The selection tool was the most important tool in this project. As I became more comfortable with the various choices, I was able to mask my elements more effectively and make my work more fluent.
Findings: I realized how we could use the blending modes to our advantage. Initially, I didn't think I'd use anything but end up using a handful. The blending modes made my work more exciting, and it brought in effect that I didn't even think to add.
