Decisive Moment

[Instructions]

[Research]

One of the scenes I wanted to do was from a movie name Bridge to Terabithia (2007). It was a movie I watched in elementary school, and this movie was made to break young children's hearts. This scene is straightforward; Leslie, and Jess, the two characters, say goodbye to each other, but if you watch the movie, you know what a big twist the story takes after this. When I thought about the word decisive moment, this movie immediately came into my mind because this changed the film's whole plot and my innocent childhood life.

Another movie is Spirited Away (2001); while there were many scenes I wanted to do from this movie, two scenes that stood out the most was the scene where Chihiro sees Haku as his spirit self for the first time. She doesn't understand how she recognizes him as Haku. She calls out to him, and he rushes towards her to take shelter. This scene started a series of events that helped Chihiro leave the spirit world at the end.

When they see us was always packed with unforgettable scenes, one of the scenes that always stuck out to me was the scene where they were found guilty. This scene was filmed by showing each character's emotions, and their family really made it powerful. Plus, the scene with the trumpet really made it all the more powerful. This is the scene where their whole lives change; as stated by the director, this is the last time they were boys because, on this day, their childhood and their innocence were stolen from them.

Mulan's transformation scene, I think, is the best example of a decisive moment. The part where she decides to go to the war instead of her father turns the story's tide. This scene marks the beginning of her journey, and the short scene does justice showing her character's determination and transformation.

Another excellent example of a decisive moment is the scene where Moana begins her journey. In the scene, she eventually listens to her grandma and sails across the reef on her boat. Moana's grandma dies in the scene and is reincarnated as a stingray that leads the way. From this scene, her journey begins as she seeks to save her island and her people.

Out of all the sketches I made, I like the Moana sketch the most and decided to make my the gif based on that sketch.

[Details]

Fig1.5 Sketch 5: Moana 2

I tried to redesign a bit; I made the surface a little wider so that the boat could be seen better, and I could add more elements like the waves. The concept behind this design was to show the scene where Moana began her journey. I drew the floating island because it was Moana's home, and she was leaving to save her people and the island that was dying. I had to add the string ray, Moana's grandmother, who encouraged her to follow her heart, and she was also the one who led the way in the scene. Also, the 'hook' stars which represent Maui, who she was trying to find.

Fig1.6 Boat construction

I started by making the important elements of the design first. I used Illustrator's perspective tool to make the boat, and then I made the island and the stingray. After completing most of the elements, I moved everything to photoshop and started putting the design together.

Fig 1.8 Island and stingray details

I did a splash animations, and below, you can see the four artboards I drew to show the water movement. When making it into a gif, I put each artboard into a new layer; this was accompanied by the stingray's slight movement to give an effect of the stingray jumping out of the water.

In Photoshop, I started making the island more detailed by adding the dark and light tones; I also added the vines and some moss on the rocks. Then I drew the waterfall, which I would animate later on. I added placed the boat to see which position looked better.

Then I moved on to the background; I colored it all black as I felt it contrasted nicely with the island's blue and was similar to the scene I was trying to make. I very lightly added cloud going up from the water.

I finished the background by adding the stars before animating it. For the waterfall, I used to transform key in the timeline. I just enlarged the imaged and moved it down slightly to give the effect of waterfalling. Lastly, I added the tagline line at the bottom.

After I had finished the first gif, I was not very happy because I didn't feel the design reflected much about perspective. Only the boat displayed some perspective. Therefore I tried making another gif this time; it was from the show 'When they see us.' Once again, I started with the main elements I drew the boy, using the reference scene in Fig.1.8, I drew the boy using Photoshop.

Then on Illustrator, I use the perspective tool to draw the background. As seen in the reference scene, I use a one-point perspective to construct the buildings and the road. Once I was happy with that, I laid down the base color for all the buildings, roads, and cars.

Fig.2.5 Gif 2 progress

I added details to the cars and buildings in Photoshop, added the trees, and gave noise to the whole design. I felt the noise gave the entire design the vintage feel I wanted, as this was a story of 1989.

Then I worked on the layers I would use during the animation. One was the light version, and the other is the dark version. The idea behind this was to show the place Harlem, their home, which was a bright, happy place of their childhood, and soon it turns dark as the story progresses.

Lastly, I added the bar of the jail cell to signify their wrongful conviction. In the animation process, I played around with each layer's timing, and I also added the fade effect to make the transitions smoother.

[Reflection]

Experience: This project was a bit difficult for me because I was relatively new to animating. I tried to watch many videos and what Mr. Fazal demonstrated in class; luckily, I figured it out enough to complete my gif. I was delighted when we got the extension on our deadline as this allowed me to experiment more with the perspective; I felt the first gif was lacking in that aspect.

Observation: One observation I made while watching the video recommended by Ms. Anis was the perspective tool and how to manipulate the keys to change the view from eye level to a bird's eye view. I think this would be very useful for my design later on.

Findings: I thing I noticed about myself is that I tend to put more pressure on myself. Even with the extension, I struggled with the workload because I had another project due on the same day. However, because I wasn't satisfied with it in my first GIF, I pushed myself to make another one. Next time I will try to do more research and ask for feedback, so I don't have to do things last minute to be more prepared and hopefully get it right the first time.
