Week 1

Week 1: Briefing
Tuesday, January 5,2021

Mr. Shamsul briefed us about the final project, and we got into groups of 4 and discussed ideas for our project ideas. For the final project, we had to create an infographic that educates the viewer about the topic of our choice. The few topics we came up with were:

  • Origin of Covid - Is covid from china? , from animals?

  • Covid as a biological weapon

  • Muslim are terrorist - statistics of contribution, Islam help Christian

  • Diet Drinks/tips  -  gain money from selling false diet drinks

  • 5G Radiation - covid spread through radiation, caused technology companies struggles

  • Covid Vaccination - side effects, anti-vaccination

  • Covid is not contagious - treat them as normal flu, take this virus lightly

After discussing all the possible topics, we decided to choose a topic that would be relevant to the current situation, and so we decided was the very unfortunate disinformation:

“ COVID-19 Is Not Contagious”

We worked as a group to answer all the questions Who, What, Where, Why, and How about our topic.

Week 2:
Tuesday, January 12,2021
As we were having difficulties coming up with data for our topic, we decide to change our topic to something easier to research and something more engaging for the viewers. So we brainstormed new misinformation/disinformation:
  • Eating food within 5 seconds of dropping it on the floor is safe.
  • Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker.
  • Swallowed gum takes 7 years to digest
  • Sugar makes children hyperactive.
  • Healthy teeth should be perfectly white.
We all voted on the topic that we found the most intriguing and decided on:

'5-second rule for food.'

Once again, we worked as a group to answer all the questions Who, What, Where, Why, and How about our topic.

Once our topic and research were approved, we started to work on our mood board and storyboard. We divided our group into two teams, an illustration team with Cynthia and me and an animation team with Della, Timothy, and Caitlyn. As I was in the illustration team I decided to make the mood board. I asked my team members to find me images of any art styles they like and from there I created a mood board for the character design, the background design, and the fonts.  I had to do some research on what fonts are usually used in the infographic.

Fig.1.3 Moodboard

I began to draw out some character designs with the mood board that embodied the art style we were aiming for. I tried to draw basic characters so that redrawing would be simpler. As the art style from the game 'Dumb Ways to Die' was our inspiration, some shapes are similar.  I tried to use what I learned about character design during IVN last semester, where the shape reflects the type of character you are trying to portray. Most of the characters I drew were very round with some slight differences because I wanted to show the characters as kind, cute characters.  I think when you have cute characters in the video, especially infographic videos it can help retain the viewer's attention.

Week 3:
Tuesday, January 19,2021
This week our group finalized the character designs and all the elements that needed to be drawn. I changed the design for character C as I was not very happy with it. Then I drew all the food elements while Cynthia worked on Genghis khan, Julia Child, and the clock.

Week 4:
Tuesday, January 26,2021
This week Mr. Shamsul wanted to see our animatics for Act 1, so I started with a simple background design and just copy-pasted the characters into the scene. I added arrows to indicate to the person animation the movement of the characters and where to zoom in or zoom out.

After I was done with the animatics we started working on all the scenes. We a divided the workload by Cynthia illustrating act 2 and with me illustrating act 1 and 5. The rest of the scene didn't really require many illustrations and the animation team just needed to work on the data.

Week 5:
Tuesday, February 2,2021
This week we showed Mr. Shamsul our final character design and our animatics. He gave us feedback on what we need to improve on and also suggested we let our family members watch the video and as for their feedback. So first the animation put together the video:

Fig.2.0 First draft animations

After watching the video we asked our family to watch the video and during our meeting we discussed what needs to be improved. We broke down each scene and listed what needs to be changed:

Scene 1:
- A and b should be walking align
- Timer countdown 5 - 1 sec
- shorter B wriggles and bushes moving
- lower background music
- C extending color
- intro comes in ( chewy font) ( longer animation)
- bacteria moving animation individually

Scene 3
- background-color
- bacteria moves individually
- kid eating cookie animation

Scene 2
- 13-14 century ( change animation ) + don’t disappear
- “ding SFX” Genghis Khan name appeared in arrow

Week 7:
Tuesday, February 16,2021
Mr. Shamsul's feedback just said to fix the background music but each of us watched the video for ourselves and pointed out things that we would like to change.

The changes we had to make:

act 1:
- the movement of the hotdog in the first scene, along with the walking movement
- Cait voice is too loud
- speed up the "are you referring to the 5-second rule bro" (just a bit)
- change the font color for the timer and title (so that it doesn't look like an outcast from the whole video)
- slow down the movement of the bacteria and hot dog in 0:39-0:54

act 2:
- Laughter of Julia child ( after narrator stops talking)
- clear the black outline outside act2
- the resolution for drumstick (1:07-1:09)

act 4:
- the hand is cut off (2:09-2:11)
- layering problem 2:19
- hand movement is a bit too fast (C looks like he's tryna hit somebody lol) 2:30-2:35

act 5:
- glitch at 3:17 and also there's a funny line under C's hand
- a mouth under a mouth (B) 4:01

We fixed what needed to be fixed and on Sunday did the final adjustments before submitting.

Feedback

[Week 1]:
- Mr. Shamsul suggested making sure we have enough data and evidence to make our narrative. Find 5W1H, counter-argument, and defend evidence.
- Mr. Shamsul suggested we try to add more data about the people who believed in the disinformation. How it affected the community? (show sayings or research of people don’t wear a mask) and How it affects the US/ around the world? ( show statistic).

[Week 2]: - Mr. Shamsul liked our new topic and the script. He just suggested we add the expressions the characters make and the sound effect we will add.

[Week 3]: Mr. Shamsul said that our style and color scheme fitted our topic. For the storyboard, he suggested we think about the transition from 1 scene to another, add a sound effect - Act 2: add a short trivia scene who is Julia child - Sparks ( does that means the food is clean?) - Act 4 need more visual details - Act 5 (back to the first scene) - rewinding animation

[Week 4]: The characters look very flat add shadows and highlights. The food color looks more vibrant than the characters so try to make them similar.

[Week 5]: My sister looked at the video and the background music was very distracting, the quote was hard to read as it went by too fast. Maybe you could list down the symptoms.
- Cynthia's friend: VO is not clear (volume up), the text is too fast, and maybe add subtitles?
- Caitlyn's Parents: Animation and Illustration was good but VO was too quiet and the Impostor scene has no purpose.

[Week 7]: Mr. Shamsul - This looks like the final. Everything looks fine. I would suggest you find different background music that is suitable for the video. The one that you use doesn’t feel right.

Reflection

Experience: When I heard that this was a group project, I was uncertain about how we will animate this while living in different countries, but the regular team meeting and WhatsApp discussion made the process much easier. We made the right decision by dividing into an animation group and an illustration group; the animation group had more people as it would have taken more time to edit. This made the division of workload equal, and we were all able to complete our tasks on time. The topic we picked was very enjoyable, so it was fun to develop characters and a storyline for the video.

Observations: One observation I made with this project was that the more we watched our final video draft, the more things we find need to be fixed. Since everyone has their perspective on the storyline, when I think the animation does justice to the plot, others might not. So, we made sure to ask our friends and family to watch the video to see if the video's message was successfully getting across.

Findings: One thing I learned while doing this project was the importance of the storyboard. In the beginning, our storyboard wasn't very detailed and was just an overview of our plot. This made my job as the illustrator of the group much harder as I didn't know what part would have what movement. After getting feedback, we all took our time and revised the storyboard to make it more detailed, and with this, I was able to come up with all the scenes much quicker, and it made it clear to the animation group what to animate.
