Final Project

Week 6:
Monday, February 11, 2021

To start our final project we had a discussion on how to use our data collection to come up with a final outcome. We had a consultation with Mr. Asrizal as we were a bit confused on that part. We first explained to him what our plan/ ideas for our final outcome were. We had planned to inform the audience about the current political matters happening in China through our hanfu design. Mr. Asrizal suggested focusing on the positives of hanfu, as time and time again people tend to focus on the negatives. He suggested we tried to promote the original symbolism about the virtues and beauty of hanfu.

Week 7:
Monday, February 15, 2021

Now that we understood what it is we had to do we had a meeting to discuss our five final outcome ideas. We used our first proposal and also the google survey we conducted during the data collection process to come up with five ideas.
  1. Mask
  2. Bags
  3. Poster
  4. Instagram filter
  5. Resin Art
Out of all the ideas, we all agreed on Mask, bags, and poster, plus on our google survey, these items were the most voted. The masks and bags would have embroidery of the 'four gentlemen' which refers to the four plants more commonly used in hanfu. The poster would give information about the products we made and also about hanfu culture.

Today we had a briefing on the final project with all of the lecturers. We got a chance to ask questions about what our final outcome would look like and the lecturers told us to know what message we want to convey with our final outcome also to see what would be the best medium to do this. As for the final outcome 'as long as all the members agree that this the finished version we were aiming for' we have our final outcome. Lastly they explained the peer evaluation we had to complete for all of our group members.

Later we had a meeting with the group to share the sketches we came up with for our bags and mask design.

Week 8:
Monday, February 22, 2021

Today we had a consultation session with Mr. Asrizal to get our ideas approved. Mr. Asrizal looked at our sketch and our main concept which was the four gentlemen and suggested we try to express the meaning of the four gentlemen in our design. He also suggested we should use our poster to explain the four gentlemen and their meanings.

After that, we try reviewing our designs within our subgroups and started finalizing our work. I used my previous sketches to draw out the main design and then Joceline made mandalas for each plant so I tried incorporating them into my work and we came up with an embroidery pattern for the bags.

Once we were happy with our designs we tried making mockups for each bag design. Initially, we wanted to use organza material but since there was no organza material mockup we ended up using normal tote bag material.

Tuesday, February 23, 2021

We had a team meeting today to finalize our bag and mask designs. We looked at each other's work and gave feedback on what could be improved. once we were happy with that we started to discuss ideas for our poster. We had to do some research about the four gentlemen as we had not previously done that. So we divided into two groups where one group research all the information and the other starts with the illustration.

We each took one plant and started to design simple elements to compliment the writing. As gold has a lot of meaning in Chinese culture we tried using that in our poster. Again keeping with the circle theme to match with the bag and mask design.

From the research, we also found out that the four gentlemen plants have seasonal connotations as each plant grows in a different season. Caitlyn suggested we could express that using the different phases of the moon as the golden circles were similar to the moon shape. Since chrysanthemum grows in autumn I had to illustrate a quarter of the moon.

Once we were done with that we tried to combine all the elements together and started putting the details in and putting togheter the layout of the poster.

Week 9:
Tuesday, March 2, 2021
We asked for another consultation with Mr. Asrizal today as we were a bit confused with our presentation slides. We got feedback from him about our designs and also for our slides. He suggested we explain how the hanfu is related to the four gentlemen. Now that we had more information to add to the poster ended up changing the layout of the poster and amending the slides.

We had a final meeting to complete the presentation slide and to rehearse our presentation. We timed ourselves to make sure we stay within the 10-minute mark and made amendments according to our likings.

Feedback

[Week 6]:

- Focus on the positive side/symbolism of the Hanfu, rather than utilizing the negative propaganda.

- Use the Hanfu to spread a positive message and revive the Hanfu culture to its form of beauty.

- Use colors and patterns, represent hanfu no need to replicate the clothing.

[Week 8]:

- The poster idea can be used to explain the ‘Four Gentlemen’ patterns and talk about their symbolism. Can be utilized to spread and express a message to the people; in terms of each symbolism. Indicate how we can relate each symbolism with the Hanfu culture.

- Talking about a general current issue regarding each symbolism. For instance; Virtue, Inner beauty, Integrity, Nobility. To prevent the emergence of politics.

- express art and symbolism through mask and bags

- Dissect and explore different color palettes. To make design ideas more consistent.

- Self-esteem + Instagram culture; spread a message that is positive. Can be expressed in an art form, not necessarily words.

- A quote or poem on each symbolism.

- Some of our designs are inconsistent, we’ll need to finalize our color palettes and designs

[Week 9]:

- Add rationale to each of your drawings.

- Explain how the four gentlemen are related to the hanfu.

- Explain the thought behind the mandala designs.

- Add the mandala designs to the maks too.

Reflection

Experience: The final project was the most enjoyable since we could be more creative about our work this time. All members of the team were equally involved in the creative process. It was incredible to see how we were able to use our ideas to produce our final product. I was especially taken with Joceline's mandala artwork. It was a complex design that gave the other designs more significance and elevated the results. Overall, I am pleased with our results because they are exactly what we had in mind and I believe we could execute them out successfully.

Observations: When it came to illustration, each member had their style, so we had to look at all of the designs and see if we could combine them to make them look like they belonged together. We all had to look at what program we were using because it influenced the illustration style.  For the bags and masks, we were split into two groups. We were unaware that the two product styles were incompatible. We only realized and made the improvements after receiving input from Mr. Asrizal.

Findings: We realized after we were done with all of our designs that people will have different perceptions when looking at your designs. We had to make sure the design not only attracts attention but also explains what message we were trying to get across. This we had to explain better in our posters and with our explanation.
