Week 1: What is research
- Research is the systematic and creative investigation into and study of materials to reach a new conclusion. It is the increase and pursuit of knowledge.- Research expands understanding and knowledge of your academic field.
- It develops critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills.
- To start the research, first Identify your field of interest. These could be topics related t your field of specialization or current events.
- Write a research problem.m
- Formulate research questions
- Identify research objectives. What you wish to achieve from the research.
Research Problem
- Formulating a research problem is the first and most important step of a research process. A Research problem can begin with something simple to something very complex.
- The clearer your research problem,m the more clear your research output is.
- When formulating a research problem,m consider these factors:
- Interest: Choosing a topic you are interested in will keep you motivated to write and learn.
- Data Availability: try to find more information on your field of interest to see if there sufficient materials available such as research and studies.
- Relevance: Always choose a topic that suits your interest and profession.

Week 2: Problem Statement
A problem Statement is a concise description of an issue to be addressed. It identifies the gap between the problem and the desired goal. It helps readers understand the research problem. To write a PS:
- Ideal: describe the desired goal or situation.
- Reality: describe the conditions that prevent your goals from being achieved.
- Consequences: describe ways to propose to improve the current situation.
Research questions are answerable inquiries into a specific concern or issue. After you have determined the research problem the research question is the first step. To write your research question:
- Specify your issue
- Specify what you want to know about the specific issue.
- Ensure your question is answerable
- Ensure the research question is not too broad or too narrow.
Research Objective: describe what the researcher wishes to achieve. This can be linked to your hypothesis and derived from the problem statement. Use words such as 'describe' or 'develop.
A hypothesis statement is a tentative statement about the relation between two variables. Explain what you expect to happen and it does not have to correct.
The research objective should relate to your research question, and the research question should relate to your research problem.
Week 3: Research Questions and Research Objectives
The Research Objective is a clear concise and declarative statement. It is focused on ways to measure the variables. A good objective must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound, relevant, and feasible.
The inductive approach is when there is little to no existing literature on a topic. Observation: when you notice a problem and compare this problem to other sources to compare and finally developed a theory. The limitation of this is that this theory can never be proven.
In the deductive approach, you always start with a theory and then test these theories. This approach starts with an existing theory, then formulate a hypothesis based on that theory, collect data, and finally analyze the results to see if this supports or rejects the hypothesis.

Week 1: Introduction
Monday, March 29, 2021For the first class today, we met our lecturers, who went over the module booklet and what is expected from us this semester. They also briefed us about the projects and how we could go about doing them. At 5-7 pm, we had another meeting with few more lectures, such as Ms. Anis, Mr. Kannan, and Mr. Razif. Each lecturer briefed us on their field of specializations so that we could decide on our specializations. Lastly, we had to finalize and write down our field of specialization on the google sheet form. I decided on Entertainment Design.
Wednesday, March 31, 2021Today we were separated into our specialization groups with Ms. Hayat, We discussed any ideas we had for the research. Then once we got our ideas approved we did some research. Before dismissing us Ms. Hayati explained how to get good sources and what we need to get done by next week.

Week 2:
Wednesday, April 7th, 2021
This week once again, we discussions with our specialization group. This time the entertainment design team was the last group to have a discussion with Ms. Hayati so in the meantime we read over our draft and look at google scholar to find good resources we could use for our critical review.
Then we proceeded to write our problem statement.

Week 3:
Wednesday, April 14th, 2021
We continued working on our proposal draft this week after getting feedback. Ms. Hayati suggested I tweak a few words in my research questions and objectives because right now the research is going more towards a mass com perspective rather than design students. She also suggested I put all my citations into APA format. Fig.1.2 Proposal Draft 3
Week 4:
Wednesday, April 21, 2021
Before the submissions, we had our final consultation today were ended up change my research questions and research object to be more design forward. Also for my research problem, after Ms. Hayatis's suggestion, I decided to focus mostly on the lack of body diversity in female character designs rather than the implications of that. This week Ms. Hayati also suggested I look at my in-text citations because some of them weren't following the proper APA format. Fig.1.3 Proposal Draft 4
After I was done with that I created a presentation slide and move all the information into it. For the theme of the presentation, I choose a layout that had shapes because I was talking about body shapes and made it a bit colorful.

Feedback
[Week 1]:
Narrow down the representation you want to show in character design. Is it diversity or culture?
[Week 2]:
- “So Far so good”.
- Try changing the word ‘consumers’ to ‘gamers’.
- Write the problem statement in the third person.
[Week 3]:
Cite the links in APA format.
Tweak a few words for your research questions and objectives.
Use your research as a guideline for your character research.
[Week 4]:
Rationale: The rationale is okay the writing style could be more academic. Place in-text references after the word video games. Avoid with or for or by or some others at the start of your sentence/s. Avoid 1st person indication. Perhaps use your name, Sajiya, or the researcher or designer.
Research Problem: It would be better to describe the lack of body diversity in female characters rather than the implications it has.
Problem Statement: Cite the statements. It will be best to say that the research will benefit you to propose more diverse character designs in the future.
RO & RQ: The ROs and the RQs sound big scope, but if you can manage...I am good to say ok. Go ahead with this research.
