Week 1: Inspiration

Fig.1.0 Printing pets

The first video I picked was the printing pet video, and it's a very short clip but a great trick. This was one of the first videos I had watched of Zack King when he started making the video, and I remember this video to this day because of how fun the video concept was. Since I have a cat, I think it would be fun to try it out with my cat.

The second video is a trick with perspective. It's another simple trick and doesn't require too many elements. Again, this video looked very simple to do. That's why I choose it.

The last video I choose because combines painting and magic tricks. For this trick, I think the sound plays an important role in making the illusion believable.

Week 3: How to

This week we had to find video tutorials on making the videos; although I didn't find the exact how-to, I found similar tricks that I could use to complete my 'magic tricks.'

Week 4: Plot segmentation and Storyboard

This week we had to pick a trick we were going to do and, using that come up with a story, the plot segmentation, the shot list, and a storyboard.

I thought we had to draw the storyboard, so I made a mistake; after consultation with Mr. Martin, he suggested it will be better to get shots of each scene, so I know how to position it on the day of the filming. So I took the pictures for the storyboard in different locations and camera angles.

Week 8: Filming

Week 8, we had to start our filming and have all the clips ready. I followed the storyboard and completed filming. Luckily my cat was willing enough to film with me, and I could finish it quickly.

Week 9-10: Editing

This week we had to edit the final video. I placed all the videos in my timeline and first worked on the sequence and then the color grading. Unfortunately, the quality of my video was very low when exporting it from my camera to premiere pro.

After getting feedback from Mr. Martin, I fixed what needed to be fixed, and I removed a few shots that I felt were unnecessary. I tried to look up many videos on youtube to see how I could fix the noise on the video and decrease it a little. Lastly, I added the music and sound effects such as the 'click' and the 'printing sound.'

Feedback

Week 5:
Mr. Martin Suggested I try to finish filming in one room instead of doing it in two rooms. He suggested I could move the printer to the first bedroom.

Week 10:
Mr. Martin suggested I increase the time by just 1 second to show the screen before printing and then instead of zooming into the print button, I could directly jump to the print. He also suggested I fix my jump cuts and see if my phone camera quality is better than the camera because right now the resolution looks too low.

Reflection

Experience:  Project 2 was both enjoyable and challenging. It was entertaining because we grew up watching Zach King videos, and being able to perform the trick ourselves was thrilling; nevertheless, the time constraint made it difficult. In addition, we have several assignments and projects to complete as we approach the end of the semester, not just for video and sound production but also for our other modules. As a result, completing our work was a real challenge. Unfortunately, the quality of my video isn't the best, but I'm happy with the overall result.

Observations: I found that sound played an important role in making the tricks convincing in this project. While viewing Zach King's videos, I noted how he attempts to keep the background noises and music to a minimum. Instead, he focuses on precisely timing the sound required for the trick.

Findings: I learned the hard way that making a video clip with noise/grains appear good is difficult no matter what effect you apply. As a result, it's critical to use a good HD camera and appropriate lighting when filming. This is something I need to remember for all of my other projects.
