Task 1: Personification

Week 1:

On the first day of class, we were briefed on our module projects and then asked to pick one existing narrative for our character design. From there, we were also asked to make a mood board observing the costumes the characters wore in those worlds. For me, I picked two different existing narratives. The two existing worlds I picked were Game of Thrones and Dirilis: Ertugrul. Both were similar in the era and genre of the world only difference was that one was fantasy while the other was based on true events. I wanted to try to combine both worlds to create a new world for my character.

Week 2:

This week we had to build our world, we had to decide whether our world had magic if there were other kingdoms or in my case tribes, how did people get along what was the hierarchy. This would all help in developing our character furthers. We also had to give our character a backstory and most importantly a name.

Week 3:

After we presented our narrative to Ms. Anis we started working on sketching out our 10 silhouette sketches. For my character design, I took a lot of inspiration from Turkish nomad girls and tried to give a princess/ warrior vibe.

After I was done with the 10 silhouette sketches I picked 5 designs I like the most and did a progressive drawing. As my characters were already very detailed from the first step I didn't have to do much in this step. Instead in this step I developed the weapons and saw which character matched which weapon.

As is still couldn't pick one design from the five designs I pick my top three designs and developed them a bit. Then from these three designs, I combined designs 1 and 3 to come out with my final character design. I didn't pick number 2 as I thought the clothes and the posture didn't give off a warrior princess vibe instead it looked more like a dancer.

Week 4:

After developing my final character I drew it in detail and developed a face that would be fitting for the pose.

Week 5:

The last step for this project was the character turnaround. Once I was happy with the detailed character design I worked on how the character would look from different angles.

Feedback

[Week 2]:

- Try to look at Mongolian lifestyles more, and think about what they do for a living or does their world has magic.
- Finish compiling the reference pictures for the story and the world and then you can proceed to sketch.

[Week 4]:

- Really nice design just maybe for the final design add more details to the skirt as compared to the top it looks a bit empty.

Reflection

This module's character creation was far more extensive than what I had done previously in IVN and foundation. Drawing a silhouette as the first step in character design was a new experience for me because I was used to getting right into the details, which is why my first few sketches were not as rough as they should have been. I devote far too much time to detailing when I should be experimenting with different shapes and forms. I eventually tried to relax a little, which made my work go much faster.

One important take away from this project was the process of combing and removing element to create something new. I thought this was a very effective process that made my character get better with each progression and by the end I wanted to do more progressions that was required. Overall I am happy with my character I believe she embodies the personality I wanted her to.
