Reflection
Experience: I had no previous typography knowledge before this module, but I hoped that I would quickly grasp it. We learned a lot of new terms and a range of skills over the weeks. I have always done my best to pay attention to all the lectures and take notes. I struggled a lot in the first week due to the unexpected increase in the number of responsibilities. I didn't know how to manage my time best to reach the deadlines. If I were to be truthful, typography was the class I had the most difficulty with. I kept doing my best as the weeks went by, but I was still making little progress. I kept making simple mistakes and still received feedback that my work wasn't the most articulate. My work didn't change the way I wanted to, and I wasn't pleased with much of my work as a result. The feedback sessions were extremely stressful because I felt that the effort I put in was not being relayed to the lectures well. Besides that, I have learned a lot from this class and experienced things I never thought I would do, such as making my typeface. I intend to take these experiences to my next semesters to help in my journey of becoming a better designer.
Observations: I noticed that I tend to make rather foolish errors when I look over crucial criteria in the assignments. For example, I finished creating the entire layout in project two and got all the point size and typeface right, but the page size was completely wrong. This experience allowed me to make it a habit to check the MIB before starting a project and before submitting it. I found that my shortcoming in my assignments was due to the fact that instead of concentrating on one aspect, I was trying to improve on everything. For example, I should have spent more time researching how to better express typeface than trying to enhance kerning, tracking, and expression. I already had a clear understanding of kerning and tracking, so I should have concentrated more on type expression.
Findings: Through this module, I have understood the significance of typography in design. We see typography in our daily routine without even realizing it. I have begun to identify all the various typographic designs around me now that I have learned how much work and thoughts go into each letter. We also got to learn Indesign and Illustrator in this module. These two software help you understand the importance of guidelines when designing your layouts. It also allows you to understand what type can and point sizes to use because not every typeface goes it all the layouts.
