Exercise 1 - Quantifying Data

For the first exercise, we had to find items in our household and arrange them into a presentable chart on an A4 paper. The item I could find was jewelry beads and coins,, but I decided to go with the jewelry beads to achieve a more aesthetic look. I started by separating them according to shape.

Fig.1.0 Materials

I started counting each piece I have, then I tried to find any similarities and differences between them to categorize them into groups. I separated all the beads by first their shape and then by the sizes. The last category was the number of each bead and whether it was golden or not.

Fig.1.1 Categories

I decided to organize my data in a circle, and as you from inside to the outside of the circle, the quantity of the beads increases. I folded the paper in half and made the right side for gold color and the left side for the beads the was not gold. Next, I separated each group into subgroups according to their sizes from small, medium, and large. As some groups did have all three sizes, they were separated into small and large groups. I started by placing the pearls in the middle as they had the least in numbers. First, I put the 'small' pearls inside the first circle and then the 'large' pearls outside. Next was the studs, again repeating the same process of placing the 'small' first and then the 'large' studs. This process was repeated for the rest of the jewelry beads.

For my data, there were four categories the number of beads, the shape of the beads, the size of each bead, and finally, whether it was gold in color or not.

Fig.1.3 Exercise 1 Reworked

After the feedback from Ms. Anis, I colored side the circle to clarify what the circle represents. The circles with yellow consist of pearls, the blue have studs, and the red has flower-shaped beads. I also added a caption, as she suggested.

Exercise 2 - L.A.T.C.H

For exercise 2, we had to create a L.A.T.C.H. infographic, so for my infographic, I decided to go with one of my favorite series Adventure Time. While researching, I found that there were very few infographic designs on the map of adventure time. So I wanted to create one myself; I started with a rough sketch about the information I wanted to convey. I drew an island and drew all the different locations on the map. I used the title song as a reference to see which location goes where. Then I started by adding the character and identifying any groups I could make from the character.

Fig.1.4 Sketch

I found all the characters I was going to use online and decided to make icons for them by adding a gold circle. One thing I changed with my design was that instead of Fire Princess, I decided to go with Lumpy space princess as she is one of my favorite characters.

Then I drew out all the small elements I needed, the mountain design that I was going to use for the ice kingdom had to be exactly the same as it was particular and original to the show. As for the clouds and trees, I created my own style while keeping the same color scheme. The mountain had to be adjusted to fit the shape of the island.

Fig.1.6 Elements

Once I had all my elements, I started to place them according to their locations. I sharted with Lumpy Space and the Ice kingdom. I added opacity to some clouds to give a look at them being further away.

Fig.1.7 Process 1

Next, I made the Candy kingdom; I took the tree vectors I made and repeated them. I used an image for the Castle as it was very complicated to make, and I didn't want to alter it.

Fig.1.8 Process 2

Then I finished up the rest of the island by adding the tree fort and Marceline's house. Once again, I decided to use images of the houses instead of drawing them out. As marceline's house is actually in a cave, I decided not to make a cave or put her in another level; instead, I choose to make the grassland much dark than compared to the tree fort.

Fig.1.9 Process 3

Now with the Island done, I use the character icons I made to label which character lives. I added the label of the character and the location to its respective places.

Fig.2.0 Process 4

I added the logo and a small caption saying what the infographic is. I added margins and organized all the elements inside the margins to make the infographic look a bit neater.  I also decide to add a few bits of information about the locations.

Fig.2.1 Process 5

As I wanted to categorize each character's species, I decided to make little icons for each species. For the cady people, I made the icon look like corn candy. For the vampire, it is a drop of blood; for lumpy space people, it's a star because a Lumpy space princess had a star on her head, and it's quite recognizable with their species, and lastly for human, I made a leaf as Finn lives in a treehouse.

Finally, I added all the icons and labeled them correctly; I decorated the infographic with starts to bring the whole design together.

Feedback

[Week 1]: Try to color code the circles so that you can differentiate each shape. Also, use different tones for the gold compared to not gold. Add a caption stating that these are bracelet jewelry.

Reflection

Experience: These exercises were pretty straightforward and easy to do, so I enjoyed working on them. Especially exercise two, since I got to work on an infographic based on my favorite cartoon, I had a lot of fun making the map on the places that exist on the show, plus I got a chance to add my style to it.

Observations: As I have become more familiar with Illustrator, I have realized how much cleaner my worker looks in line work. Now that I am more comfortable with the software and know my way, I also realized I could finish my work much quicker than my previous work.

Findings: I have found that I appear to be more creative when I am short of time. We got one week for each exercise, and I was able to use my time productively and come up with the concept much faster because I knew the due date was so close. Although big projects are important, I believe that small activities like this can help us think more creatively.
