Exercise

Week 1:

This week's briefing was similar to the Game Art module, where we were introduced to the MIB and our project for this semester. Mr. Kannan explained and showed examples of the expected environment design, how to include all the details and how to develop our work. While the workload appears substantial and intimidating, I am eager to start.

Week 2:

1.0 Research and Proposal

Project 1

Week 3:

1.1 Exterior and Interior Thumbnail Sketches

Week 4:

1.2 Value Studies

Week 5:

1.3 Ambience Studies

Week 6:

1.4 Project 1 - Exteriors and Landscapes

Feedback

Week 3: Read more on the history of your location to help you. These sketches are fine now just have to adjust them for their function and design. Make sure it's not too flat and has more perspective. Think of the journey and how to get to these locations.

Week 5: Sketches 1,2, and 3 are good so work with those. For the interior, the idea is there but make it a bit more detailed. It's still too flat. #1 looks good so work with that.

Week 6: Think about the assets such as the trees, the palace the interior, etc. Set design how to get to the palace, draw the entrance and the place exterior. Add cultural motifs and add pillars that are of the architectural style in India.

Reflection

Environment design was more difficult than I anticipated. Trying to build an environment for your character's world is extremely different from the landscapes I am used to creating. It was quite interesting to sketch my landscapes in black and white value; at first, the drawings were very rigid and flat, but after learning how to give them more depth, my compositions looked much better. I wasn't pleased with the first several sketches I made because I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted. However, as I was developing my characters for game art, I attempted to design surroundings to suit them. In the end, I was pleased with only one of the three landscapes I was able to create for project 1. If given the chance I would have like to explore and further refine the other two compositions.
